Report Submitted June 13, 1999

Last year the big question was, "Where are the makos?. Not this year. The KING WAYNE brought in the first on Friday, and on Saturday the MISTRESS and HALFBACK each caught one. They were all around the 200 pound mark. This bodes well for the upcoming shark tournament to be held at the Star Island Yacht Club, and with the number of entries expected to top 250, there are sure to be some good fish taken, as long as the weather cooperates. The contest will be held Friday and Saturday, and if you are interested in showing the kiddies what "JAWS" looks like, bring them down to the marina. The boats should start showing up around three-ish.

The shark fishing rules were changed this year to limit the number of sharks that can be kept to one per boat, reduced from the two we were allowed last year. It was a pretty stupid move if the idea was based on conservation, since you can almost count the number of boats that brought back two sharks on a single trip on one hand. It shouldn’t be a big problem unless one boat catches two good fish and has to decide which one is more likely to get him a prize. Then he’ll have to release one, most likely dead, similar to what the shark finners have been doing.

The Second Annual East End Striped Bass & Bluefish Championship will be held on July 10. This tournament is geared toward the light tackle guys and is an all release contest. It’s not cheap to enter it, ($500 to $1000, depending on whether it is a team or individual entry, guided or non-guided) but all the proceed go toward Boys Harbor, the summer camp for inner city kids. For more information, give Capt David Blinken a call at 516 324 2860, or go to www.zenbait.com on the internet.

Bass fishing is still pretty good for the boats, although it did get a little more difficult over the weekend. The big swells we encountered earlier in the week stirred up the bottom quite a bit, resulting in lots of fouled lures. Umbrellas were definitely a no-no, and even with the parachutes, you couldn’t fish more than a couple of minutes before you were loaded down with grass.

I took a ride down to the east jetty of Montauk Harbor Saturday evening to see what I could find, but never even made a cast. I didn’t see any fish, but there were lots of tourists there, all reeling in weeds. I’ll give it another shot later this week, when things get back to normal.

I spoke to Chet from the tackle shop in Moriches this past week, and he was raving about the bluefin tuna being taken by the flyrodders from his area. The fish were mostly around fifteen to twenty pounds and were residing in sixty feet of water south of Moriches Inlet. We’ve been seeing them here as well, but with a limit of one fish per boat, and only for fish over 66 pounds, they’re not a very attractive target, unless you are a strictly catch and release type, like those fly guys.
