Gene Kelly Report Submitted June 27, 1999 The Montauk Marine Basins shark tournament was held this past weekend, and the results, while not as spectacular as the previous tournament, were still pretty impressive. The overall winner and largest mako was taken by Tom Melillo on the MARY DONNA, and weighed in at 378 pounds. Jim Quackenbush on the STINKY took second place with his 331 pound mako, followed by Vinny Rezulli, on the SUFISHENT with a 261 pounder. Vinny, who is fourteen years old, also took the Junior Angler award.Capt Al Mott, who had the largest blue shark in the Star Island tournament on his LIL OCEAN ANNIE, also caught the largest blue in this one, 235 pounds: this time the angler was Marty Cohen. A 221 pounder was in second place, caught by Jim Collishaw on the STOCK BOY, who also had the second place mako at Star Island. Those guys must be doing something right. Marco Ceritelli on the MY DENISE had the third place blue shark, at 207 pounds. Threshers didnt place in the money in the tournament, but theyre still around. Capt Michael Potts on the BLUEFIN IV had one in the tournament that tipped the scales at 366 pounds, and Capt Eddie Baldrian on the THREE STAR brought in one weighing over 200 pounds. I even hooked one during the week, the second year in a row that my first shark of the year was a thresher. Blue sharks arent as numerous as we expect them to be this year, but no one is complaining. Most guys would just as soon catch three or four blues with a decent shot at a mako or thresher, instead of the 20 or thirty blues that is normally the case at this time of year. Bluefins are still being sighted regularly, and even caught on occasion, both by boats shark fishing, and by trolling. Most of the bluefins have been seen fairly close to The Point. More guys will probably start spending a little time trolling for them now, at least on the way to their favorite shark spot, since the restrictions on them has been eased up. As of June 25, and running until July 25, or until The National Marine Fisheries Service changes their mind, anglers will be allowed to take one bluefin from 66 to 235 pounds (47" to 73", for those who dont have underwater scales) plus two fish from 14 to 66 pounds (27" to 47"). When you catch a bluefin, you have to report it to 1 888 USA TUNA, which is also the number you should use before you go offshore to make sure that the NMFS hasnt changed the rules while you were sleeping. Im also hearing about some yellowfins out on the edge, but while the quantity may be there, the quality probably isnt enough to stimulate many boats into making the run. Capt Billy Urvalek took his KAREN SUE out there during the week and hooked up with about forty of them. Unfortunately, almost half of them were too small to be kept.
