Montauk Fishing Report is brought to you by Montauk Sportfishing and Capt
Gene Kelly Report Submitted July 4, 1999 We had a week off from the shark tournaments, but next weekend weve got another, this time the Montauk Boatmans and Captains Association Capt Bill Bock Memorial Charity Shark Tournament, quite a mouthful. Unlike the others, the money raised at this one is spread around the community in the form of scholarships, donations to charity, etc. Capt Bill Bock who passed away a couple of years ago, was one of the founding members of the Montauk Captains Association. This tournament is headquartered at the Star Island Yacht Club, and information about it can be gotten by calling there at 668-5052 or Capt Joe McBride, president of the organization, at 329-0973.Everything for the past couple of weeks has been about the offshore fishing, so this week will be about the inshore stuff. I spoke to Capt Harvey Bennett from the Tackle Shop in Amagansett. He has moved his shop to a bigger and better location. Of course the west wall of the new place is less than a foot away from the east wall of the old shop, but at least now you dont have to take turns inhaling. The surf down his way has been slow, but the bay is red hot. The fluke fishing is excellent right in front of Acobonac Harbor, where its protected from the strong winds weve had over the past week. You have to pick through the shorts, but there are enough keepers there to assure you of your limit. The bluefish have been thick in the area of Cartwright Shoals, and to catch them all you have to do is keep a lookout for the birds. The fly rod guys are also doing great with the school bass, as long as the winds and cloud cover allow. Back here at Montauk, the striped bass fishing is as good as it gets. Boats anchored up and chunking at Great Eastern have been taking a mixture of bass and bluefish, but the bass being taken by that method are on the small size. Catching a keeper isnt a problem, because there are plenty of fish, but there are definitely more non-keepers than legal size fish. Trolling is producing a much better class of fish, with lots over the 36" mark.. Capt Mike Albronda on the MONTAUK had two bass on the same rig the other day that totaled 78 pounds. The fluke fishing is kind of confusing right now. If you like catching them its great, but there are a lot of shorts around, some of them exceptionally short. You can find decent fish, but you have to scout around a bit The trick is not to stay where the little guys are, but to keep trying different places until you get the good ones, most of which seem to be out in the deeper water. The Montauk charter fleet lost a good one this past Saturday, with the passing of Capt. Phil Lewis of the ADIOS. He had been sick for a couple of weeks.
